Good Morning Vietnam tells the story of an US Air Force Disc Jockey sent to Saigon, Vietnam in 1965 to run a radio show at 0600 every day. Adrian Cronauer (Robin Williams) is a very different DJ to the rest of them, his antics are unaccepted by his superiors but worshiped by the troops on the ground. He is funny, and can be rude, but without him morale in amongst the troops wouldn't be nearly as high.

This movie isn't the typical Vietnam War movie, it's a comedy and we don't see alot of fighting or troops. What we do see though is one radio presenter lifting morale to all his listeners. We see Adrian fight his own personal battles, with friendship and with his superiors, who want him off the air.

Whilst I was serving, I remember a DJ who used the exact same sign on saying, "Gooood Morning Viiieetnam". This was always a hit with the men. In the movie this is proven when Adrian meets alot of Infantry Soldiers right before they deploy into the field, he made them so happy with his catch phrase and jokes.

We see Robin Williams play an outstanding role as a comedian and morale booster, but he is also very sly and devilish. An example of this is when he starts teaching the English class just so he can get close to the girl that he is in love with. He soon becomes attached to this class and teaches them slang, such as "You pissed me off!" and more. He quickly becomes popular amongst the local people.

This movie is a very different movie to the other Vietnam War movies, this is because it does not concentrate on the infantrymen like typical war movies, it concentrates on the media, and it's impact on the Infantry. When I was serving, a good radio show was great to hear, it would help us relax and just wind down while we were at base camp.

There are a few events in this movie that can be related to the real war. Some accurate features of this movie are things like the bar getting blown up, this used to happen a fair bit, mainly by VC; also it wasn't an uncommon occurrence for GI's to fall in love with local girls and the Army did do English Classes for locals.

All in all this movie is quite a good watch, and I would recommend it, as I said above it is a very different movie to the other war movies but is a good contrast, with a good storyline and setting.
